Consumer Council Committee Formed
The first meeting of the newly formed Fellowship Health Resources Virginia (FHR VA) Consumer Council Committee (CCC) was held this month. The Council was assisted by two FHR VA staff members, Sophia McKenzie and Adrienne Randall and began by developing its mission and formal leadership. Peter D. was selected as the first President, with Bill S. as the Vice President, Priscilla C. as the Treasurer, and Patricia B. as the Secretary. Steven H. asked to be considered “Member at Large.”
The group began by identifying projects that they could undertake while they evolve its mission. The first project was determined to be a reorganization of the Social/Recreational activities available for FHR VA consumers. A calendar was developed and potential activities were identified, as well as suggestions regarding financial support and resources for the group. The first specific activities of the month were identified and plans were made to organize the activities. The Committee suggested that a specific budget be allocated for their activities and planning. They reflected on the increasing financial strains placed on mental health consumers, especially as they are expected to pay more for their rent and utilities.
The Committee identified ways that FHR consumers can be more politically active and advocate effectively for matters affecting mental health consumers. However, an important point was made by one of the members addressing the stigma associated with the term ‘consumers.’ “Please don’t call us consumers,” he said. “We are all people.”
Peter D., the newly elected President of the CCC, recommended that Fellowship Health Resources’ CEO Joe Dziobek visit the VA Region at least once per year to “speak with the CCC.” They recalled a Strategic Planning Meeting held in April 2010 that was constructive, and enabled them to get their ideas across to the head of the agency.
The CCC scheduled its next meeting for June 22 and agreed to meet once per month. On the agenda for next month is identifying financial resources, planning activities, and how to be an effective body within the agency and in Arlington County.
