Wellness Management and Recovery

Wellness (Illness) Management and Recovery (WMR/IMR) is an evidence-based practice developed with support from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA). A psychoeducational program, WMR uses cognitive behavioral techniques, motivational techniques, and education to empower people with mental illness to identify what recovery means to them and to develop and implement an individual recovery-goal action plan.

The current 11 chapters are:

  1. Recovery Strategies
  2. Practical Facts About Mental Illness (specifically schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression)
  3. The Stress Vulnerability Model and Treatment Strategies
  4. Building Social Support
  5. Using Medication Effectively
  6. Drug and Alcohol Use
  7. Reducing Relapses
  8. Coping With Stress
  9. Coping With Problems and Persistent Symptoms
  10. Getting Your Needs Met in the Mental Health System
  11. Healthy Lifestyles

Each participant in the WMR program receives their own binder to take with them after the program ends so they may continue to work on their wellness independently. FHR NC is fortunate to have five staff members that have undergone extensive training in WMR, including a two-day introductory training, a one-day on-site intensive training, and monthly phone consults. Warren Smith and Joan Rollinson (ACTT team), along with Autumn Coffey, Stacy Smith, and Zelphia Sullivan (PSR), comprise the WMR Team for FHR-NC. The Team has facilitated several groups and provided individual support using the WMR treatment model.
