Fellowship Health Resources Receives Waste Reduction Grant

FHR NC has been awarded a $3000 grant from the Wake County Solid Waste Reduction Committee to help our offices become green. Our project, Waste Not, Want Not, focuses on increasing efforts to reduce, recycle and reuse at the main office in Raleigh and the satellite office in Cary. Specifically, we will use the funding to buy:
- recycling bins to increase the amount of recyclable products collected
- a continuous-use composter for yard waste
- a worm composter for composting food waste
- an all-food recycling compost kit with Bokashi
- scales to track how much we recycle and how much we throw away
- upgrades for gutters at the Cary location to allow for collection and storage of rain water for gardening use
- reusable water bottles, travel mugs and lunch bags to use as incentives and also cut down on waste
Grant coordinator, Stacy Smith, worked with Ray Cowan from the Cary location, and Travis Jackson from the Raleigh location, who served as the site-specific leads for this exciting project. Both sites have active gardening groups that are looking forward to having access to compost to improve their crops, and rainwater to reduce or possibly eliminate the amount of potable water used on the garden beds.
With our project we hope to reduce our waste output by 50-65%. Please visit the Fellowship Health Resources’ website often to follow our progress. We will also be sharing our experience in going green and any tips or ideas we might come across that you can use at work or at home.
FHR NC would like to sincerely thank the Wake County Human Services Waste Management Department for providing this wonderful opportunity.
